A person with no internet presence! – a survey
A little while ago I tried to find an old friend. Being away from our common home, it was not possible for me to pop round to the neighborhood or the local and make an inquiry. So I tried the internet I searched for his name, and his nickname, but he was not to be found! I thought he might have died, but had no luck tracking down any record of his death, either. It got me to wondering: What do you call a person with no internet presence?
I made survey of the …internet…by putting various search strings into quite a few search engines, in various languages. I got back very little direct information, but then I was … well…asking databases and sources which *are* on the internet. Could one do better?
I decided to try asking people (yup, who *are* on the internet) the direct question. I went to Yahoo! Answers (https://answers.yahoo.com/) and posted my question. I let it run until today, Friday the 30th of January, 2015. The results are a bit interesting!
What does this have to do with culture, one might ask! Well, our modes of communication, like our languages, are tied into the cultures which are our sources. We are making a new world with our continued conversations together, finding common language and media. Our culture is evolving, and even the extent to which individuals or groups participate in that, is cultural. Interestingly, Yahoo! categorized the Question as Society and Culture > Religions and Spirituality. So does that mean that some people think of the internet as spiritual and religious? Things that make you go ‘Hmmm’!
To the results of the survey: tied for most answers were ‘private’ and ‘unabomber’.
Unabomber? He dates from way before the internet even existed, so he had no reputation for not being online, it wasn’t even a possibility back then. I got to reading that bit of history, recalling that I was a high-schooler at that time and place, and a group of us even found one of our cars tampered with in the same way that fit his m.o.! Close call? We’ll never know. Recently I watched the movie about it, probably on an airplane trip somewhere. So here comes the name again!
Actually, I grouped ‘private’ and ‘anonymous’ together, because they are often used as synonyms. Actually, the same number of responses came back as ‘huh’, which seems like a non-responsive statement, or something like ‘kangaroo’, so there’s no way to call that the label for such a person. A couple of answers were ‘mentally healthy’ (one actually ‘sane’) which strikes me as ….quite sensible. And someone said ‘My Mom’ which sounds quite familiar! Thanks to everyone who replied!
